Wheathered remains of deserted coalmines, whaling stations, trapper huts and research settlements from the 17th through the 20th centuries can still be found in the imposing landscapes of the Arctic and the Antarctic. They are a heritage which helps us to understand the history of the exploration and the exploitation of the polar areas. And they enable us to sense the hardships suffered by the people who lived and worked there.
