Call for Abstracts for International Polar Year Session (J03) at the MOCA Joint Assembly: July 2009
IAMAS, IAPSO and IACS invite the international atmospheric, oceanographic and cryospheric research community to MOCA-09, their Joint Assembly, to be held 19th July to 29th July 2009 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. At the start of the fourth International Polar Year in March 2007, Professor Wayne Pollard of McGill University’s Geography Department, a permafrost scientist involved in seven different IPY projects, and his PhD student, Nicole Couture, were discussing ways to improve permafrost education for students at McGill University. 2008 Disko Bay expedition takes artists to the Arctic
At Cape Farewell HQ we are busy answering last minute questions from our intrepid crew; it seems that nine months of preparation have gone all too quickly and we're counting down the hours and not days or months to departure. Our launches are launched and so we set sail. “Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers”:
A major philatelic event for the closing of IPY in March 2009
Last Saturday September 20t 2008, at the “Austria Center Vienna”, a few steps from the UN Headquarter in Vienna, have been officially presented the major philatelic event concerning the “International Polar Year 2007-2009”.
To pay tribute to all the efforts made during this fourth “International Polar Year” 2007-2009 and to deliver a strong message aimed at the whole world, the postal administrations of around 40 countries have decided to joint to produce a common stamp issue concerning the problem of the Global Warming and featuring the slogan “Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers”.

Parks Canada to lead new search for Franklin ships
The Prince Albert II of Monaco foundation is financing the participation of scientists and students in the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) Aquatic Sciences Meeting to be held in Nice, France, Jan 25-30, for the Topical Session 054: Impacts of Climate Warming on Polar Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems. As a result of this financing, 12 fellowships worth 1000 euros each are available, to be used to finance the participation in this polar session of 12 scientists from developing countries, countries bordering the southern Mediterranean, or students. A Chilly Swim in the Arctic
I'll let the pictures tell today's story — and the Students On Ice journals that I have just been proof-reading prior to transmission. It was a great day for me, but an amazing day for most of them. The highlight without a doubt was the Arctic Swim, and the phenomenal weather. Then, in the evening, hearing the students telling their ideas for activities they want to get involved in when they get home. But as I said, the pictures tell a thousand words.
