The 2008 convention of the Canadian Science Writers' Association will be held at: Yukon College Whitehorse, Yukon May 24-26, 2008 The convention will focus on the International Polar Year and on science in the North. Besides two days' of panels and presentations, the event will also include a large display of posters about northern science and IPY projects. In addition, a one-day field trip will offer convention participants a chance to meet and talk with scientists and First Nations outside Whitehorse. The German Youth Steering Committee was founded in 2006 to approach a young public about current issues relevant to polar research. Our website lists our activities. We are looking for young polar researchers who are either currently writing their diploma thesis or their PhD thesis, and who are already engaged in a post-doc project. A historic collection of artifacts once the property of General David L. Brainard will be sold on September 21, 2007, in the rooms of London auctioneers Dix Noonan Webb. Brainard was the only survivor of the sledge party that achieved a "farthest north" record during the Lady Franklin Bay Arctic Expedition of 1881-84 (popularly known as the Greely Expedition). He was also the expedition's last survivor, passing away in 1946. Among the medals in the collection is Brainard's Explorers Medal for the "farthest north" record, and a special Explorers Club medal commemorating the fifth anniversary of Robert Peary's North Pole discovery. This coming November 2007, a team funded by the National Science Foundation will be stationed at Cape Royds on Ross Island, Antarctica, conducting penguin science. What's unique about this project, however, is that is has a large education outreach component, aimed at school students, connecting them directly from the classroom to the science being conducted in the field. Researchers and explorers will probe the Gakkel Ridge during expedition that begins on July 1. They will be using new robotic vehicles to hunt for life and hydrothermal vents on the Arctic seafloor.
