Since 1990, Australia has been monitoring Adelie penguins on Bechervaise Island near Mawson station. This season, new automated cameras powered by solar panels were installed to measure breeding and chick survival in Adelie colonies.
The solar panels provide the sole source of power. The cameras "sleep" through winter and then "awaken" at the beginning of summers, as their solar panels recharge. Once the cameras are set up, only a short, single visit is required each year to download photos.
Yet another great idea that is green, saves money and does good science!
