Dr. Manish Tiwari, scientist at the National Centre For Antarctic & Ocean Research in Goa, India, writes:
India is enthusiastically pursuing the outreach goal of IPY, which is being coordinated by National Centre for Antarctic & Ocean Research (NCAOR, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India) in collaboration with WWF-India (World Wide Fund for Nature). Several competitions were conducted for the school children throughout India that included poster & model making, projects, stamp designing etc. as outlined in the chart below.
The award winning posters of the first competition i.e., “Poster & Slogan Writing” have now been published in the form of calendar for distribution. The images from the calendar are shown here to give a flavour of the imagination of the young minds.
Also, NCAOR is bringing out special issues of scientific journals under the aegis of IPY, especially to spread awareness about polar science in scientific community. For example, in March 2008 a special issue of Indian Journal of Marine Science was published to commemorate IPY. Now special issue of another Journal, Hill Geographer, has been published to further achieve the goals of IPY.
This journal is published by The Geographical Society of North-Eastern Hill Region based at Shillong, capital of the Indian state Meghalaya, in the far north-east of India. Thus it provided an excellent opportunity to extend the wings of IPY into one of the farthest & remote corner of India.
