Below are some reviews of Ivan’s Appeal.
Melanie Lister-Kaye Education Manager, Aigas Field Centre:
Earnest, informative and sincere: Ivan’s appeal is packed full of information and ideas conveyed through endearing characters and a strong plot that is accessible to most children in the UK today. This book is a must for parents struggling to answer their children’s questions about climate change and its impact. It is a book for parents and children to read together and will spark imagination and curiosity about such a vital subject. A Blue Peter badge winner if ever there was one!
Dr Gay Mitchelson-Jacob MSc in Climate Change, School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor:
Ivan's Appeal is a most unusual story, which succeeds in bringing climate change impacts and potential mitigation effects to the fore. Aimed at children it has appeal and is written in such a way as to relate to junior/secondary school ages. It provokes thought and realisation not only to its child audience, but amongst adult readers who should know better, yet tend to ignore the many ways in which individuals can help reduce greenhouse gases. The idea of having children lead the way forward is brilliant - though not always realistic. The written imagery of a soggy melting iceberg is quite poignant. The story clearly indicates the worldwide impacts of climate change and, as such, although it is a story, it could be considered to be a children's text on climate change. Often it is as stories that children learn most about their world and this book will certainly ensure they understand some of the global issues of climate change and how they, as children, can influence change.
Primary Choice (Volume 1, Issue 5, 2007), a magazine where teachers review resources for teachers:
Ivan’s engaging tale is infused with practical questions and scientific facts that help children explore the issue of climate change. However, what could become depressing reading is made uplifting through inspiring examples of the changes we can make to take care of our planet.
