IPY Science - Sea Ice
Sea ice, the thin layer of ice that covers most of the Arctic Ocean and surrounds most of the Antarctic continent, represents a distinctive feature of our planet. Sea ice spreads and retreats seasonally. It drifts and packs under the influence of wind and currents. It isolates the atmosphere from the ocean and produces the coldest saltiest ocean waters. It restricts the movement of ships but supports the traverses of bears. Sea ice contains unique organisms that sustain under-ice ecosystems. Poised where slight warming converts ice to water, sea ice has an exquisite sensitivity to climate. Its disappearance from any region, at any season, will represent a profound planetary change. Understanding sea ice and predicting its future represents a crucial challenge for IPY.

German Youth Steering Committee (GYSC) Is Looking For Interested Researchers
The German Youth Steering Committee was founded in 2006 to approach a young public about the current issues of polar research. Our website lists our activities.
The members of the committee aim at bringing together an online network of young polar researchers, teachers and high school students. The committee assists teachers and students to integrate polar research in natural and social sciences and the arts with the curriculum. The focus on German is a decisive aspect of our project. Commonly available resources are compiled in English and are of limited use.
At the moment, we coordinate presentations and discussions at high schools. We also make available brief (password-protected) presentations and articles for furt...

Poster: Climate change over the past 800,000 years
The aims of AntonyJinman.com are three-fold:
To promote Education through Expedition
To report credible eye witness accounts of climate change
To promote sustainable technology for the future.
"Through exploring remote locations around the world I aim to highlight environmental issues within the classroom. Expedition takes us to places that few people have been to. To travel to a place and experience such environments first hand is so much more powerful than reading a textbook in a classroom. Through use of film and photography I aim to share these experiences, to educate and inspire. "

Penguin science outreach coming to Ross Island
This coming November 2007, a team funded by the National Science Foundation will be stationed at Cape Royds on Ross Island, Antarctica, conducting penguin science. What's unique about this project, however, is that is has a large education outreach component, aimed at school students, connecting them directly from the classroom to the science being conducted in the field.
Education outreach coordinator Jean Pennycook explains:
For the months of November to February our team will be stationed at Cape Royds, on Ross Island, Antarctica, in the Adelie penguin breeding colony. During that time I will record the lives...

How to contribute to the IPY KML layer
We're building a KML layer that collects geospatial information produced by IPY-endorsed projects. This short manual shows you how to format your project's data in a KML file for inclusion in the IPY layer.
To help tell the IPY story as effectively as possible, we've created a standard set of icons, as well as standard popup window styles, which all contributors to the IPY layer can share. There are 8 different icons depicting different kinds of data, in 4 different colors; that's 32 icon variations. In addition, we have 2 different styles of popup window for each icon — totalling 64 different style permutations.
Here are the icons:
