The Swedish group left the meeting site on January 1 and went via two depots from the Norwegian-US traverse. It was fuel, empty barrels and scientific samples, which we have loaded on our vehicles now. We are now at 75°39’S and 19°14’E and during the coming days we will head westwards. The Japanese members are working with radiometers mounted on a vehicle and they are doing detailed physical studies of snow in pits. They have also given the rest of us a first introduction to Japanese writing. The students were more enthusiastic than good but we all learned how to spell our names.
