World Environment Day June 5th 2007: A Focus on the Polar Regions
World Environment Day 2007 this year is focussing on the polar regions, in recognition of the International Polar Year. Two books are being launched today by UNEP in conjunction with this day. The Global Outlook for Ice and Snow is an in-depth report focussing on the state of ice-covered regions, written for a general audience but containing hard scientific answers. Complementing this Ozzy Goes Polar, focussed for kids, sees the return of our hero, Ozzy Ozone, on an adventure to the polar regions. ...

Melting Ice-A Hot Topic? New UNEP Report Shows Just How Hot It's Getting
World Environment Day 2007
Tromso/Nairobi, 4 June 2007 - The futures of hundreds of millions of people across the world will be affected by declines in snow cover, sea ice, glaciers, permafrost and lake ice a new and unique report launched to mark World Environment Day (WED) says.
Impacts are likely to include significant changes in the availability of water supplies for drinking and agriculture, rising sea levels affecting low lying coasts and islands and an increase in hazards such as subsidence of currently frozen land.
An estimated 40 per cent of the world's population could be affected by loss of snow and glaciers on the mountains of Asia says the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in the Global Outlook for Ice and Snow.

NOAA Polar Resource Bibliography
The bibliography "International Polar Year 2007-2008 Resources on Polar Research in the NOAA Central Library Network : A Selected Bibliography" has been prepared to support NOAA Central Library (NCL) activities during International Polar Year 2007-2008. It reflects the NCL network’s unique print and online resources on exploration and research in Polar Regions. It includes citations organized “by title” from NOAALINC, the library's online catalog, and from the library's historical collections. Grand Final of the ICE-Edge competition
The EDGE educational foundation promotes vocational learning throughout UK. As its contribution to IPY project 343 it launched the ICE-Edge competition in January 2007 in which teams of schoolchildren aged 13-17 from 10 regions in England and Wales submitted project ideas for tackling issues of climate change and environmental problems.
The prize - a once in a lifetime trip to Svalbard to see for themselves the changing Arctic environment, meet polar researchers and get involved in polar projects.
The response was fantastic with well over 2000 entries submitted and from these entries 37 teams were selected to appear in a Grand Final held on 5th May at Imperial College, London. A team of expert judges (including Cynan Ellis-Evans from the IPY International...

Interpolar Poetic Art Gallery
Argentina invites artists to contribute to the electronic exhibition of the Interpolar Poetic Art Gallery. Argentina will host an "Interpolar Poetic Art" Gallery during May as a pre-launch for the Interpolar Poetic Art Post Card Project at the Dreamland Pub, in Ushuaia. Ethical Principles for the conduct of IPY 2007-2008 research
The ICSU/WMO Joint Committee for the International Polar Year 2007-2008 has established the following ethical guidelines for IPY researchers: All researchers working in Polar regions have an ethical responsibility to avoid harming the environment and to respect and avoid disruption to the lifestyles and livelihoods of Polar peoples. These responsibilities are entrained in a variety of international, national and regional laws, guidelines and codes-of-conduct, and researchers have a duty to be familiar with these before commencing their projects.
