IPY Outreach Workshop Summary
Education, Outreach, and Communication (EOC) in IPY are a continuum of activities and ideas. As with the rest of IPY 2007-8, the EOC components build on local and regional activities and needs, and utilise existing networks and technologies, to raise awareness of the polar regions.
To this end, a group of educators from around the world met together to discuss strategies and activities that could build on existing structures, and help to raise awareness of the polar regions using existing resources.
The suggestions of the educators were then passed on to two groups: one focussing on the needs of young researchers and early career scientists, and the other on the international media. The idea was to identify and develop activities that would serve the broadest ...

A new exhibition - Ice Station Antarctica - opens at Natural History Museum for International Polar Year 2007-2008. It will challenges kids to understand the importance of the frozen continent.

Ethical Principles for the conduct of IPY 2007-2008 research
The ICSU/WMO Joint Committee for the International Polar Year 2007-2008 has established the following ethical guidelines for IPY researchers: All researchers working in Polar regions have an ethical responsibility to avoid harming the environment and to respect and avoid disruption to the lifestyles and livelihoods of Polar peoples. These responsibilities are entrained in a variety of international, national and regional laws, guidelines and codes-of-conduct, and researchers have a duty to be familiar with these before commencing their projects. In its Edinburgh Declaration on the International Polar Year 2007-2008, the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting said:
“We, the Antarctic Treaty Parties, express our support for a successful International Polar Year. We believe that the scientific research undertaken during the International Polar Year will increase knowledge of the Antarctic and will yield a better understanding of the major terrestrial, ocean and atmospheric systems that control the planet. The polar regions are sensitive barometers of climate change, and we value their biodiversity. Their health is vital to the well-being of the earth’s systems and its inhabitants.”
