Oak Park and River Forest High School  2010 Joseph P. McMenamin Science Lecture
Marking the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day
Friday, April 23, 2010

For complementary tickets and more information, visit www.OPRFscience.org.

On Friday, April 23rd, Oak Park and River Forest High School will welcome two world-renowned scientists to share their first-hand experiences and beliefs about the rapidly changing poles and global climate. Both scientists have spent significant time in the polar regions. Both are involved in collecting and analyzing the most recent data and will bring first-hand observations and experiences to share. Opportunities for public questions will be provided.

Teachers, students and community-based environmental groups will be presenting interactive climate activities prior to the lecture, and again during intermission.  If you or your group would like to request space to present, please visit www.OPRFscience.org.

Dr. Ross Powell,
Distinguished Research Professor, Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences, Northern Illinois University has been teaching and researching
for over 27 years. His passion and interests focus on processes where glaciers and ice sheets enter the sea, and in interpreting the sedimentary records indicating how and
why glaciers move into and out of the sea at the present and during past climate warming and cooling cycles. He has 34 years of research experience in high latitude regions
including Arctic Alaska, Svalbard (Norway) and Baffin Island, Antarctica, and Chile.

Dr. Jenny Baeseman, Founding Director of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), works internationally to help thousands of young researchers develop their careers and their ability to help us improve our understanding of the polar regions and their global connections. Dr. Baeseman, an Antarctic researcher by training, loves the polar regions so much that she has moved to the Arctic where she continues to share her work with schools, teachers, and public audiences globally. Dr. Baeseman will give an overview of the major impacts of a warming Arctic on terrestrial and marine ecosystems and the 3 million people who live above the Arctic Circle.
