Description
The 2007 International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Sciences meeting in Santa Barbara, California in late August 2007 will include a workshop on polar instrumentation. The workshop will discuss issues related to GPS and Seismology. There will also be some planning and coordination of IPY deployments
in Antarctica.
Remote Geodetic and Geophysical Observatories: Challenges, Successes, and Emerging Technologies for IPY
The workshop is from 1 - 5 pm on Sunday, August 26 which is the day prior to the start of the regular ISAES meeting. The deadline for abstracts to the
ISAES meeting has been extended until May 31, so you still have time to submit an abstract case you have not done so already!
The workshop is focused on the IPY POLENET project which proposes to install geodetic, seismological, meteorological and other observatories in the polar region. Key issue covered in the workshop will be the technological aspect of remote site installation, operation and communication. Coordination of various national plans and data exchange protocols will also be discussed.
Principal topics:
* remote Geodetic and Geophysical observatories
* co-located observatories
* power problems and solutions
* radio and satellite communications at remote sites
* operation of equipment and sensors in the extreme cold
* POLENET data and metadata: access, exchange and archiving
See you there...
The Convenors: Alessandro Capra, Reinhard Dietrich, Bjorn Johns, Douglas Wiens, and Larry Hothem
The ISAES symposium information and a link to workshop registration can be found on the conference website.
