Details of the conference:
Quaternary Research Association (QRA) - Annual Discussion Meeting
Sea-Level Changes: the Science of a Changing World
Hosted by: The Department of Geography, Durham University, UK
Tuesday, 5th January to Friday, 8th January 2010
The QRA hold an annual themed meeting on a particular topic in Quaternary Science. This year the theme is sea-level changes. These meetings are open to both members of the QRA and other academics interested in the focus topic, from the UK and abroad. Early career scientists, including Masters and PhD students are particularly encouraged to attend; in recognition of this, registration fee is half price for postgraduates. The conference is being hosted by Durham University which is providing accommodation and there will be a conference dinner in the Great Hall of the Castle in Durham, part of the Durham Cathedral and Castle World Heritage Site.
The meeting will be of interest to those members of Cryolist working on past and future sea level change and ice sheet / glacier behaviour.
From multiple Quaternary glacial/interglacial cycles to perceptions and predictions of future scenarios, changes in sea level reflect the complex interactions and consequences of our transient Earth – Climate system and, more recently, society. The 2010 QRA Annual Discussion Meeting will address these interactions through themed sessions that aim to explore the different spatial and temporal scales of sea-level change.
The conference format will comprise two full days and one half day of presentations on four themed sessions:
1. Modelling sea-level change: global to local scales
2. Quaternary sea-level change, past people and their environments
3. Resolving ice-sheet and sea-level interactions
4. Sea-level change 2000 BP to 2100 AD.
Invited keynotes who have agreed to give papers include:
Professor Dick Peltier talking on modelling sea level: global to local scales.
Professor Kurt Lambeck talking on resolving ice-sheet and sea-level interactions.
Dr Mark Siddall talking on Quaternary sea-level changes and implications for the future
Professor Colin Murray-Wallace talking on Quaternary sea-level changes
Dr Jason Lowe talking on future sea-level rise and implications for UK coastlines.
There will also be an evening “Any Questions” style session on “Sea level science and society: effective communication of our research”, with a panel comprising academics and the media to answer questions from conference delegates.
