Description

International Polar Year Lecture Series at the Grand Valley State University

Title of the talk: Discovery: The Warming and Waking of the Polar Ice
By Robert Bindschaller, NASA Goddard
Location: Grand Valley State University, Allendale Campus: 1 Campus Drive, Allendale, MI 49401, US

One of the direct and harmful consequences to humans will be the increase in global sea level as the ice sheets continue to shrink at One of the direct and harmful consequences to humans will be the increase in global sea level as the ice sheets continue to shrink at accelerating rates. Current modeling of ice sheet dynamics does not fully represent the number of processes that are responsible for the changes at any scale. As more processes are considered they can be mutually reinforcing, which shows that the ice loss in the future will continue at even greater rates. Quantitative models which are not presently available are urgently needed to help predict future changes. Past glacier retreat records also provide evidence that humans will be experiencing more global issues in the future.

All lectures have free admission and are appropriate for students in middle grades through adults. Lectures will be held at 7 p.m. in Loutit Lecture Hall 101, Seymour and Esther Padnos Hall of Science on Grand Valley State University’s Allendale Campus. Receptions to follow. Parking in Lot F after 6:30 pm.
