Athy Heritage Centre (Athy, Co. Kildare, Ireland) established the Ernest Shackleton Autumn School to celebrate the life and work of the great Antarctic explorer, in the area of his birth. The school hosts a varied and vibrant programme of lectures, displays , drama and field trips. As well as featuring all aspects of the explorer himself, the school attempts to capture the spirit of Shackleton. This encompasses the fields of history, exploration (polar and other), endurance, motivation and leadership, amongst others.
The event reaches out to a varied population, from local schools to national and international bodies.
Attendances have grown consistently since 2001 when the school was inaugurated by the Hon. Alexandra Shackleton (grand daughter of Sir Ernest), who has been a constant supporter since. In 2006, over 1,500 people enjoyed the varied programme that was presented.
Events centre around the Heritage Centre in Athy, which maintains a permanent exhibition on Ernest Shackleton. Set in the rolling midlands of Ireland, the vicinity of Athy is where the Quaker community established a settlement in the 18th Century. Amongst the early arrivals were the Shackletons who established their presence in industry and education. In 1874, Ernest Shackleton was born into this family. It is fitting that one of the greatest names in exploration and human achievement is celebrated in the locality where he was born.
The School runs from Fri 26th October (opening reception at 19:00) to afternoon Mon 29th October (note – this is a Bank Holiday weekend in Ireland).
