A session of scientific event A21 Oceanography, Cryosphere and Freshwater Flux to the Ocean is dedicated to Cryosphere, Polar Oceans and the IPY:

The Arctic climate is undergoing a strong change in recent
years. The declining Arctic sea ice is the most obvious indication. The
threats linked to the thawing permafrost, the accelerated melting of the
Greenland ice sheet are opposed to the chances and challenges of the new
shipping routes and the exploitation of the natural resources.
Intensified human activities in the Arctic region will increasingly
influence the fragile polar environment. For its monitoring, spaceborne
earth observation systems are the key tools to study the remote polar
regions. The measurement of the sea ice volume is of tremendous
importance to assess the state of the Arctic climate system.
Other challenges are the observation of the Arctic troposphere and their
changes. The assimilation of surface and atmosphere observations in
coupled ocean-sea ice and ocean-atmosphere models is a necessary step to
arrive at predictions over short time scales that are important for
secure ship routing, improved weather prediction and for the long time
scale of decadal climate predictions and for the reanalysis of optimized
climate records.

Please submit your abstracts on using remote sensing methods and their applications to polar regions, especially modeling, to support evidence or research on climate change. The paper may be of original or review nature.  It may originate in sea ice, ocean or atmosphere observing, modeling, parameter retrievals algorithms or operational products.
